What is granola?

Granola is a baked breakfast dish usually containing rolled oats, combined with a sweetener such as honey, along with nuts, seeds, and sometimes dried fruit. It is baked until crispy then once cooled it is broken into chunks and served in a bowl with milk.

What is in this granola recipe?

This granola recipe contains rolled oats, honey or maple syrup, vegetable oil or coconut oil, and several handfuls of different nuts such as almonds and hazelnuts, and a handful of pumpkin seeds. For flavour, it has ground cinnamon and vanilla extract.

What to serve with granola?

Granola is usually served in a bowl with milk poured over. You can use standard dairy milk, or use a milk alternative such as oat milk, almond milk, soya milk, or coconut milk. We even know some people who like to skip milk altogether and choose apple juice to soften their granola. And others like to use fresh, plain yoghurt with their granola.

Of course, if you have any fresh fruit mix that in with your bowl of granola. Favourite fruits for granola include raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, kiwi, banana, and or apple.

For us, we love to add a sprinkling of dark and milk chocolate chips to our granola.

And finally, if you want to try something different, you could add some homemade granola to some ice cream to make a delicious dessert!

What are the benefits of eating granola?

Some people might ask ‘is granola good for you’? The answer is yes, of course! Like anything, you should always eat in moderation and vary your meals. But granola contains oats which are full of nutrients. As are nuts, seeds, and dried fruits if you also add those your granola. This is a healthy granola if you want it to be.
